Science & Society InitiativeRound Table discussion - Situation in Belarus
Hannes Jung (DESY)
Abstract: The presidential election in Belarus took place on August 9th 2020. Alexander Lukashenko was reelected to the sixth term in office, with the Central Election Committee crediting him with 80% of the vote. Following the presidential election, which were described by independent monitors as neither free nor fair, the country has witnessed mass protests from citizens who believe the vote was rigged, violent police crackdowns on those protestors and massive violation of human rights, including repressions against Belorussian academic community. Our aim is to give people on the DESY campus a platform to discuss this issue at a round-table and to share their opinions about the situation. We will discuss its possible consequence for the world politics and science. All details can be found on the SciSo webpage: https://www.desy.de/~jung/SciSo/index.html
