Astroparticle SeminarProbing the cosmic-ray pressure in the inner Virgo Cluster with H.E.S.S. and the prospects with CTA
Victor Barbosa Martins | DESY
The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) is an array of five Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) located in Namibia. The H.E.S.S. telescopes are sensitive to Very-High-Energy (VHE) gamma rays between ~30 TeV and ~100 TeV. At a distance of 16.5 Mpc Messier 87 (M87) is one of the closest radio-galaxies, located at the very center of the Virgo galaxy cluster, a Cool Core (CC) cluster. In the inner part of CC clusters, optical measurements have shown orders of magnitude lower star formation rate than predicted by the Cooling Flow (CF) theory. The Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) feedback is proposed as a heating mechanism, which counterbalances the cooling of the ICM and solves the CF problem. In this seminar I will show how we can probe the AGN feedback in the inner Virgo Cluster with H.E.S.S. observations of M 87 and what are the prospects of such observations with CTA.
