Blazars are a subclass of active galactic nuclei (AGN) with jets generated in the environment of a central accreting supermassive black hole. Jets “shine” across the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum due to non-thermal radiative processes, involving relativistic particles, such as electrons and positrons. Recently neutrinos of multi-TeV energies have been detected from a distant blazar, known as TXS 0506+056, making this class of astrophysical sources an interesting target for multi-messenger studies. Being the smoking gun of relativistic protons, the detected neutrinos sparked the interest in the so-called hadronic models for AGN jets, where relativistic protons are also accelerated in the jet, producing their own EM radiation. The complexity of calculating the jet emission while accounting for the interactions of protons with photons, makes the exploration of the time domain with multi-messenger models difficult. As a result hadronic modeling of AGN jets has been focusing on the time-average EM emission, even though these objects are known to “flare” across the EM spectrum. In this talk, I will discuss hadronic models for AGN jets in the time domain by presenting examples of hadronic flare simulations, and their predictions for CTAO and IceCube Neutrino Observatory.
