String Theorie SeminarN=3 field theories in four dimensions

I will discuss various constructions of SCFTs in four dimensions preserving 12 supercharges. The simplest examples (obtained as a quotient of N=4 U(N) SYM) appear as the low energy dynamics of D3 branes probing strongly coupled generalizations of the O3 plane in F-theory. I will also discuss how to rephrase this construction in terms of compactifications of M5 branes on T^2 inside a U-manifold, and describe some of the generalizations allowed by this rephrasing.
