   Short description of the project the student should work on  :
    "Analysis of ATLAS data for  pp->Z->ee channel."
Data collected during the 2012 contain a large sample of Z->ee decays,
at increased center of mass energy. For the cross-section measurement the
background processes to the Z->ee decay need to be studied and subtracted. 
The dominant background contribution comes from QCD multi-jet events. This background
can be determined using data events, collected with criteria, different from the nominal
selection. The task of the student would be to optimize these selection conditions
for the 8 TeV data which were taken with large number of pileup events.
The other task would include optimisation of the nominal selection criteria,
to reduce background with minimal bias to the signal data. 
The result of this work should allow for more stringent tests of the Standard Model.

knowledge of C++.  Knowledge of root, python other scripting languages are helpful. 
Understanding of statistics, fits.
