Towards CTA, the Next Generation Very High Energy Gamma-ray Observatory

Juan Cortina (CIEMAT)

Sky observations in Very High Energy gamma rays (>10 GeV) are key to our understanding of particle acceleration in the Universe, the physics of compact objects and jets, the radiation and magnetic fields in cosmic voids and even the nature of dark matter or gravity. Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) are the instruments of choice in this energy range. They rely on the detection of Cherenkov light produced by electromagnetic showers in the Earth's atmosphere using telescope mirrors with diameters of a few to tens of meters. The next generation Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), consisting of two arrays of IACTs at the northern and southern hemispheres, should start construction in a matter of months. Observations with the prototype 23 meter LST-1 telescope on the northern site of La Palma, have in fact already started. I will report on the scientific goals of CTA and its progress, with a special emphasis on the latest news from La Palma.
