NOTE UNUSUAL TIME! Solving the spacetime without Einstein

Chia-Hsien Shen (UC, San Diego)

The observation of gravitational waves by LIGO/Virgo collaboration has opened a new window into the universe. With the rapidly-increasing accuracy in current and future detectors, we need to advance our theoretical modeling to an unprecedented level. Recently, a new research program based on quantum field theory has risen to a prominent role in this regard. In this talk, I will explain how to solve the gravitational binary problem directly from fundamental principles and symmetries, bypassing the need of Einstein equations. Leveraging modern tools from scattering amplitudes and effective field theory, we obtain the state-of-the-art results that are of interest to gravitational-wave science.
