Nucleon form factors from Lattice QCD for neutrino oscillation experiments | Lattice seminar

Dr. Lorenzo Barca (DESY Zeuthen)

The observation that neutrinos can oscillate via the PMNS mechanism from one flavor to another suggests that these elementary particles have a very small but non-zero mass. The nucleon vector and axial form factors are needed in Monte Carlo generators used to analyse the neutrino oscillation experiments. In particular, the axial form factors are not known very precisely experimentally, but they can be computed by simulating the theory of the strong force: QCD. In this talk, I will review the fundamentals for extracting these functions with lattice QCD and present the status of the lattice results. One concern that regards the axial form factors in lattice simulations is excited state contamination. For the first time, we address this problem using the variational method consisting of a basis of nucleon and nucleon-pion operators, which enables to remove the Nπ contamination from the nucleon correlation functions. In addition, this opens the door for the determination of nucleon to nucleon-pion matrix elements, which are also very relevant for neutrino oscillation experiments.
