Ewelina Łobodzińska receives ATLAS-Award

DESY scientist specialises in simulation software

Today, DESY scientist Ewelina Łobodzińska received the ATLAS Outstanding Achievement Award "For outstanding contributions to the development of Monte Carlo generator software in the Athena framework." The international team of researchers called the “ATLAS collaboration” that runs and uses the gigantic ATLAS particle detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva hands these awards out every three years to selected collaboration members for outstanding contributions to technical work on detector operation, upgrade, software and computing. This year, a total of eight awards were handed over in a virtual ceremony during a collaboration meeting.

Ewelina Łobodzińska’s speciality are Monte Carlo generators. These are essential to calculate how the ATLAS detector records and reconstructs events predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics or by hypothesised models of new physics. The generators are normally written by theoretical particle physicists. Ewelina Łobodzińska has been working for many years to make these generators usable within the ATLAS software, insuring that the results are correctly applied and the proper tuning parameters are used. This is essential for the 3000 physicists in ATLAS to use the simulated events to understand the detector and to do their physics analyses.

DESY took this task as a service to the ATLAS collaboration and Ewelina Łobodzińska assumed the main responsibility for it. Without this work physics results like the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012 would not have been possible.
