From 1 to 2 October, the delegation visited the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Bogoliubov Institute of Theoretical Physics and met with students of Taras Shevchenko University in Kyiv. Helmut Dosch, accompanied by Christian Stegmann, Director of Astroparticle Physics, Martin Sandhop, DESY expert for international relations and the Ukrainian DESY researcher Sergii Fomin, emphasised the importance of international cooperation and scientific freedom. The exchange with the students, including participants in the EU-funded EURIZON project, highlighted the challenges facing young Ukrainian scientists in the light of the war. The EU-funded project is a network of 27 European research institutions and is coordinated by DESY. The special feature of this programme is that the recipients receive their grants in Ukraine, not abroad.

During the visit, Helmut Dosch was awarded an honorary doctorate from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In his acceptance speech, Dosch emphasised: ‘The freedom of science and international cooperation are the cornerstones of every democratic society. Peaceful coexistence on the basis of international law is an indispensable prerequisite. As scientists, we are obliged to tirelessly stand up for these principles.’

Anatoly Zagorodny, President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, paid tribute to Dosch for his special initiatives, which ‘deepen and strengthen cooperation between the research communities of our countries.’ It also helps to integrate Ukrainian scientists into the European scientific community.

Further steps to intensify cooperation between German and Ukrainian research institutions were also agreed during the visit in order to strengthen scientific relations in the long term.
