VT-PIKA - A Vacuum Tube Photodetector Integrated with a silicon Kernel for electron Amplification

Juan Pablo Yanez

A sensor capable of detecting extremely low levels of light, down to individual photons, is a vital tool across a wide range of fields, including scientific research, medicine, environmental monitoring, and industry. Despite their diverse applications, many modern detectors still rely on the nearly century-old design of photomultiplier tubes. Over the last decade, silicon-based photodetectors have emerged as serious alternatives, but their intrinsic noise has limited their use in some low-light applications. While hybrid detectors, which combine the most desirable properties of both technologies, have been proposed, technical challenges have hindered their production. In this talk, I will present a new hybrid design that successfully addresses these challenges and holds promise for next-generation experiments. I will focus on the results of assembly tests and measurements conducted by my group at the University of Alberta.
