Mikhail Krasilnikov awarded the Gersh Budker Prize
DESY scientist Mikhail Krasilnikov was awarded the Gersh Budker Prize by the European Physical Society’s accelerator group (EPS-AG) which is granted every three years for a recent, significant, original contribution to the accelerator field. Krasilnikov received the prize for his achievements in the development of high brightness electron beams and a high power, tunable Terahertz (THz) SASE free electron laser based on those beams, demonstrating lasing at the PITZ facility (Photo Injector Test Facility in Zeuthen) in 2022 for the first time. The prize was presented at an awards session during the International Particle Accelerator Conference (IPAC’23), which took place from 7 to 12 May in Venice, Italy.

Continuously pushing forward the idea of a high power, tunable THz FEL at an accelerator like PITZ, he together with a group of physicists, engineers and technicians was driving the success of the worldwide first high power, tunable THz SASE FEL which demonstrated its first lasing in August 2022 at the PITZ facility.
Now, the Gersh Budker Prize of IPAC 2023 is awarded to him for his achievements in the development of such an FEL based on a high brightness photo injector, the coordination and commissioning of proof-of-principle experiments, resulting in the worldwide first lasing of a high gain THz FEL at 100 micrometres wavelength based on the SASE principle, and the demonstrating first results on seeding the THz FEL at the same central wavelength at the PITZ facility in Zeuthen.
