FORWARD/BACKWARD CALORIMETERS

The following example shows an electromagnetic forward/backward calorimeter, at z 284 cm, starting at radius 45 cm and extending to 200 cm. The energy resolution is given by $\sqrt { 0.05^2 / E^2 + 0.0035^2 }$. The angular resolution on the shower-axis is 3 degrees in $\theta$; in $\phi$ it is 3.75 degrees. The resolution on the shower start-point is 0.82 cm in both x and y. The efficiency is 95 %, and the threshold is 0.4 GeV. It is made of lead (A=98), is 22.0 radiation lengths deep, and have a total nuclear interaction length of 0.72. This represents a lead-glass calorimeter.

         GEOMETRY:  Z=284.0, RMIN=45.0, RMAX=200.0

                       SIG_X=0.82, SIG_Y=0.82

This is two hadronic forward/backward calorimeters, at z 340 and 382 cm. They both starting at radii 53 cm and extend to 240 and 454 cm. The energy resolution is 120%/$\sqrt {E}$ (the constant term is 0). The angular resolution on the shower-axis is 3 degrees in $\theta$; in $\phi$ it is 3.75 degrees. The resolution on the shower start-point is 7.22 cm in both x and y. The efficiency is 95 %, and the threshold is 0.4 GeV. It is made of iron (A=26), is 5.45 nuclear interaction lengths deep. This represents a single hadronic calorimeter with the part at smaller radii extending like a 'plug' into the barrel detector described just above.
