  Intensive week
- Measurements with a pixel telescope

Advanced Topics in High Energy Physics

16.-20. September 2024
Intensive Week at Bonn University
16.-20. September 2022

First time this course is offered at Universities of Bonn, Cologne, Dortmund and Siegen!!
This course will be of interest for physics students beyond their bachelor, students who start their master project soon, and Ph.D. students from particle physics and other fields who wish to broaden their horizon. We will discuss particle detectors as mostly used in particle physics with focus on silicon tracking detectors. We will also allocate time to venture into medical applications.
The course is a combination of lectures on silicon tracking detectors and practical hand-on studies of silicon sensors. These include lab tests with a CMOS sensor, data analysis of data taken at the CERN test beam with a pixel telescope, and simulations of tracks in a pixel telescope. An overview of important parameters for detector testing will be given and some of them studied in laboratory tests.

While following these lines, particular emphasis is given to:

Of course, not all topics can be addressed to depth within one week. Thus, an effort is made that students will receive an overview and understand the most important concepts. The course is an all-week seminar starting on Monday morning of the selected week. Typically we have lectures in the mornings and hands-on tasks in the afternoons where the students can work in small teams on the various topics including an experiment located at the ELSA beam in Bonn.

The intensive week will take place at the Physikalisches Institute in Bonn. The exact room and lab will be announced to registered participants over e-mail in the week before the course.

Team: Ingrid Maria Gregor (DESY/Uni Bonn), Simon Spannagel (DESY)

Registration:  June 1, 2024 - August 31, 2024 - see below how and where

Important: in early September we will have an online pre-meeting for organisational matters as a dosimeter etc. is required for working in the ELSA test beam area. You can only attend the course if you participate in the pre-meeting. In case you are not available for that meeting, please contact  gregor"at"physik.uni-bonn.de in advance to sort the organisational matters.

Receiving credit points

The course is embedded in the Color Meets Flavor Cluster - thus students from the universities Bonn, Dortmund, Siegen and Köln (over BCGS) can attend the course. Below you can find details how to register and how to receive credit points.

Uni Bonn/Köln
(BCGS)
physik719 - BCGS Intensive Week
Bonn/Cologne students should register on eCampus to receive e-mails and have access to the material. Students who wish to receive course credits (3 CP) also need to register on BASIS!  Students who would like to obtain course credit for the intensive week will be asked to write a report on the results of the lab course and submit it about a week after the course. Please contact gregor"at"physik.uni-bonn.de if you have any questions. The course can also be taken without course credit.
Uni Dortmund Dortmund students can also receive credits for taking this course. Please contact Johannes Albrecht (johannes.albrecht"at"tu-dortmund.de) to discuss the details and how to register.
Uni Siegen Siegen students can also receive credits for taking this course. Please contact Alexander Lenz (Alexander.Lenz"at"uni-siegen.de) to discuss the details and how to register.
