DESY Rises in the Ranking of Hamburg’s Largest Companies
Compared to the previous year, DESY has climbed five places to rank 26.
The research centre DESY has improved its position in the ranking of the city’s largest employers. In the annual list of Hamburg’s 200 biggest employers published by the Hamburger Abendblatt at the turn of the year, DESY climbed five places compared to the previous year, reaching number 26.

“It’s great to see that DESY’s appeal as an employer continues to grow,” says Christian Harringa, Deputy Chair of the DESY Directorate. “The recognised excellence of our research portfolio – but certainly also our open-minded and highly collegial working atmosphere – is paying off here as well.”
In this year’s ranking, DESY is listed with 2,540 employees in Hamburg and 2,826 in total. The number of staff is set to increase further this year. The planning and implementation of major projects such as PETRA IV and FLASH2020+, collaborations with other research institutions, targeted support for early-career scientists, and the continued expansion of innovation activities are all driving up the demand for personnel. In addition to researchers, experts such as engineers in various fields of electrical engineering and state-certified technicians in electrical engineering and mechatronics are also in demand.
