DESY welcomes 100 summer students from all over the world
DESY hosts 100 summer students from 33 countries - an international programme full of research projects, lectures, campus tours and culture. In Hamburg and Zeuthen, participants will experience first hand how cutting-edge research works and gain experience for their scientific future. Tours through tunnels and laboratories, networking events and excursions into the surrounding area make this summer an unforgettable experience.
A total of 100 summer students from 33 different countries have recently arrived at the DESY sites in Hamburg and Zeuthen and started their packed summer programme. Students from Ukraine, Spain and Italy are particularly well represented. The students will spend the coming weeks working on research projects, attending lectures, touring the campus and enjoying cultural exchange - and of course doing some sightseeing.
The group consists of 48 women and 52 men, 86 of whom are based in Hamburg and 14 in Zeuthen. The students are involved in 36 projects in the field of particle physics, 36 in photon science, 14 in astroparticle physics, five in information technology, six in accelerator research and three at the European XFEL. They are integrated into the research groups at DESY and the XFEL over the summer and are assigned their own projects to work on. They thus learn first-hand how science works and often set the course for their professional future. And it gives students a hands-on experience of what research at DESY looks like - from the muon spectrometer to synchrotron radiation.
Specialist programme with substance and range
The scientific lecture programme started directly with a series of joint introductory lectures introducing all summer students to central research areas at DESY: accelerator technology, particle physics, astroparticle physics, photon science, as well as computing and machine learning. The programme is supplemented by specialist in-depth lectures in particle physics and photon science, which are directly tailored to current research topics at DESY.
Exciting tours - from accelerator tunnels to the harbour
A real highlight of the programme are the numerous tours through laboratories, tunnels and experimental halls on the DESY campus and at European XFEL. In addition to a general DESY and XFEL introductory tour for all students, there are seven different special tours, as well as a joint harbour tour.
Social exchange, culture and a touch of football fever
In addition to the scientific programme, there is also a lot of social and cultural interaction. At the ‘Festival of International Students’ with a BBQ, games and karaoke, participants get together with guests from all over the world - invitations have even been sent to consulates. Another highlight is the networking event with the DESY graduate school PIER/DASHH, where students gain insights into further research and career opportunities.
In their free time, the ‘Summies’ explore Hamburg on their own initiative - for example on a visit to Hamburg Cathedral, a walk around the new roof garden on the Feldstrasse bunker or a day trip to Lübeck. One group is currently even planning a joint mudflat hike in the tidal flats. The summies have already cheered on the European Women's Football Championship together - a great start to an international summer full of discoveries.
Further insights and impressions will follow in the coming weeks on our social media channels.
